our history
The Amicus ITS story started in 1988 when four leading IT industry professionals formed Second Generation Computer Systems Ltd (2GL), specialising in PC supply, networking, development and accounting solutions designed for the early days of the personal computer. From this humble platform, 2GL developed to become one of the largest independent IT systems integrators on the South Coast.
In 1989 2GL were involved at an early stage in the healthcare markets providing networking and application solutions.
1990 – 1994 Additionally, 2GL entered the education market for the first time and from 1990 – 1993 were primary in supplying networking for school administration departments and classroom environments. This culminated in the development of leading edge tools for management control of PCs like ClassLink (which was ultimately sold to Viglen).
By 1995 the company had grown organically and through acquisition, providing services to healthcare, education and mid-tier corporate companies. The management team quickly recognised the need of its clients for 24x7 support and for systems to be always available. To this end the team created its true 24x7 Service Desk based in the UK and its technical NOC environment. The company’s ambition was to provide a proactive technical environment where clients’ services were always accessible. This helped grow the company further and allowed 2GL to punch above its weight, providing full managed services to clients like Racal, Axa Wealth and Pirelli.
By 1999, with revenues in excess of £35 million and with over 300 employees, the 2GL Board agreed that a broader range of services would enhance its business.
In 2000, 2GL acquired Bristol based Counterpoint Computing (a Citrix and software development specialist). With the aim of deepening its expertise, later that same year, 2GL merged with a global business process consultancy firm, specialising in business process consulting for pharmaceutical and mid tier corporate World Class International (WCI). In its new form the WCI organisation was able to offer its customers complete solutions, but now on a global scale. Prince2-led consulting projects included design, development, implementation and management of complex, resilient Microsoft infrastructures. WCI was now in a position to penetrate healthcare, pharmaceutical, and mid-tier corporate industries and catapult the company to a new dynamic and position of authority.
In 2001 the newly merged company won a significant contract that would take the business into a new dimension, when WCI won the contract to run the telephony and infrastructure for NHS Direct, based on its 24x365 Service Desk and NOC environment.
WCI-T, the technology arm of WCI became recognised as the successful and commended ITIL-aligned 24x365
Managed Service Provider for NHS Direct, across England. WCI-T continued to grow from strength to strength, winning contracts within healthcare, regulated, public sector markets and blue chip corporates. These included Salisbury and Portsmouth hospitals, Wyeth, plus Cisco and Volvo UK.
By 2002 WCI was offering total consulting and technology solutions on a global scale to companies like Pfizer, GSK, Astra Zenica, B&Q, Circle K.
During 2004, the hardware technology division of WCI-T was split from the main business and became Amicus Technology Limited. This allowed greater strategic focus on the ever expanding services of WCI-T into healthcare, regulatory, public sector and mid-tier corporates.
With over three years experience running the technology service and support for NHS Direct, it became clear that there was an opportunity to improve the service further within the clinical arena, which resulted in the creation of a clinical environment to add to the already successful managed services offering.
2004 WCI-T joined with Harmoni CPO, a small clinical ‘Out of Hours’ service based in London in a new joint venture with the WCI Group, whereupon Harmoni Clinical Services was born. The pedigree of the two proved a powerful and potent combination within the healthcare industry. 24x365 technical support services and clinical triage became a huge success, culminating in many more healthcare contracts being won.
The business also pushed beyond healthcare, utilising its regulatory framework strengths and experience. New business included an eight year contract for the Food Standards Agency (FSA) and Meat Hygiene Service, providing its core services of Service Desk and remote support for all of the abattoirs across the UK.
In early 2007, the Board identified that a merger of Harmoni ITS and the old hardware Amicus Technology arm would yield further significant benefits to customers, by offering an increased range of services. This would allow Harmoni to focus on clinical services.
Amicus ITS Limited was formed in October 2007. As Amicus ITS, the company was now responsible for a large number of England’s 'Out of Hours' contracts, as well as growing business across the healthcare, regulatory, public sector and corporate markets.
The following five years saw Amicus ITS and Harmoni go from strength to strength utilising its winning combination of a true 24x7 all year round 365 Service Desk, with proactive network management, monitoring and intelligent hands, utilising our secure N3 environment to clinical triage centres. The increasing healthcare contract wins led to Amicus ITS managing the IT environment for 21% of the '111 marketplace' in England and 27% of the ‘Out of Hours’ marketplace.
By 2012 the Group enjoyed a turnover in excess of £100 million and employed over 2000 people. At this point, the Group was sold to a healthcare competitor for £48 Million.
The expertise Amicus ITS brought to the table was widely recognised and added further authority to the healthcare portfolio, delivering life critical IT solutions through a highly experienced team. The new group of companies had a turnover in excess of £700 million and employed over 20,000 people.
Having supported the new company for two years, the Amicus ITS Senior Management Team wanted to regain ownership of the company’s direction and drive it forwards to even greater heights. So, in 2014, the company engaged on a lengthy journey which resulted in a successful MBO being announced by the Senior Management Team led by, the Managing Director Steve Jackson in February 2016.
2016 Following the MBO, Amicus ITS’ ambition is to stay at the forefront of our industry. With this in mind, Amicus ITS is now driving Business Intelligence and Management Information offerings which link to secure data backup, threat intelligence and cyber security. This will help every organisation deliver their own strategies and ensure they are technically fit for purpose in the 21st Century.
The management team of Amicus ITS today leads a company, confident in its delivery, where its employees can experience a real sense of ownership and pride in the business as everyone walks together on this new and exciting journey. At its heart, Amicus ITS’ core values have remained unchanged since 1988. These are based upon quality, service, loyalty and recognition.
