Case Study: North East London Foundation Trust (NELFT)

Helping a healthcare organisation realise it’s strategic vision

In 2013 Amicus ITS engaged with North East London NHS Foundation Trust NELFT who had acquired the services of Outer North East London NHS Trust ONEL with all respective CCG’s. The objective was firstly a discovery phase to understand the ONEL estate in depth, but subsequently design an infrastructure and plan an approach that would see all users in the ONEL Active Directory domain, including Exchange accounts migrated into the NELFT domain.

NELFT were looking for an agile partner who could think outside the box, centralise and replicate the systems and provide greater resilience. Amicus ITS were contracted to design a highly available platform meeting with the Trust business and operational requirements spanning two NELFT locations. Our architects designed a solution built on a VMware Metro Storage Cluster (VMSC) architecture, recommending the use of certified and compatible compute, storage and networking technologies in-line with VMware and HP best practice guidelines.

The team then, based on Microsoft best practice, designed the most appropriate solution for the combined Active Directory and Exchange environments and fine-tuned the VMSC environment ensuring sufficient host, storage and networking resources were specified. We then designed a robust and scalable enterprise backup solution in-line with the Trust’s RPO and RTO SLA’s. To complete the design phase the team worked closely with NELFT to advise on the most suitable migration path and approach to ensure accounts and mailboxes are migrated into the new environment in-line with customer budget and timeframes. The outcome achieved was greater efficiency, cost savings and the start of our relationships as a trusted advisor.
