What is cloud

The ‘cloud’ simply refers to a network of servers (away from your premises), hosted on the internet – and used to store, manage and/or process data in place of local servers or personal computers. By hosting data in the cloud, it enables on-demand access to a shared pool of networks, servers, storage, applications and services.

The benefits of moving to the Cloud with a Managed Service Provider

Cloud allows companies to avoid upfront infrastructure costs and the ongoing replacement of hardware (Opex vs Capex costs).

Cloud provides flexibility on cost options with different models which can include ‘Pay as you Go’.

By sharing resources, cloud technologies rely on economies of scale which make cloud very cost effective.

Cloud enables businesses to run applications faster with improved manageability and less maintenance.

Cloud technology also enables organisations to scale computing needs up or down quickly to suit the demands of the business.

Cloud backup takes away the pain of physically managing tapes being carried offsite. Backup can simply be programmed.

migrating to the cloud

The ‘cloud’ simply refers to a network of servers (away from your premises), hosted on the internet – and used to store, manage and/or process data in place of local servers or personal computers. By hosting data in the cloud, it enables on-demand access to a shared pool of networks, servers, storage, applications and services.

The first thing that any organisation needs to consider when looking at migration options to the cloud is

  • To review whether your current IT roadmap meets your business strategy?
  • To identify which components of your IT infrastructure could most benefit from being migrated to the cloud?

In order to determine what cloud solutions are appropriate for you, this will be dependent upon the following.

  • What applications are you running?
  • What data do you hold?
  • What are your internal technical capabilities?
  • What is your current data security set up?
  • What backup schemes do you have in place today which are fit for purpose?

Below is an example of some further considerations to think about when looking at cloud based solutions

How much of your infrastructure is running operations?

Application operations for things like development and test and disaster recovery can tie up more than 50% of your infrastructure.

This is a great place to start. Moving non-production application operations to the cloud has the lowest business impact, highest value - and offers you the quickest win.

Are you running packaged applications like Office, Sharepoint, Salesforce, Dynamics, Sage, Mitel etc.?

Consider running your packaged applications as a service, like Office 365.  Cloud application services can help you manage access to thousands of cloud applications.

Are there new applications that you are looking to get or need to support?

Avoid unnecessary retrofitting, consider the cloud for your new application development projects. Cloud application services give you the building blocks to save even more time building web and mobile applications for any platform.

Do you have any custom applications which need to have a highly scalable capability?

These can be expensive and quickly become capacity constrained.  It makes sense to run these applications in the cloud. Other custom applications that you’re already running can be lower priority.
