Lewis Pugh - Systems administrator

When did you start at Amicus ITS?

2007

What your starting position?

Service Desk Analyst on the shift team.

What is your title today?

Systems Administrator.

What progressions/promotions have you made and why?

When I joined the company in 2007 I was on the Service Desk, undertaking a shift role which included out of hours cover throughout the week and weekend.  I undertook this role for four years.  I then progressed to the Network Operations Centre (NOC) having been identified by management that my skills and expertise could be used in a different way.  This role was interesting as I got involved with the changing environment of our company and our clients’ environments.

Following this I was promoted to the Security & Compliance team as an Emerging Technology Analyst in early 2014.  This role provided mainly internal support and development.  Having then gained a clear understanding of the company, its process and policies, I was then promoted to an Emerging Technology Specialist, with responsibility for policies and procedures, reporting on mobile devices, web usage and security in 2015.

Today my current role is that of a System Admin (Level 3) which I was promoted to in 2016.  Here I am now more customer-focused resolving escalated issues. This can range from application rollout; to enabling remote GPS location-tracking for a workforce; local application issues; projects like migrating entire email accounts for an organisation across with correct synchronisation from one hybrid to another on Office 365 - and ensuring all along that there is no single loss of service.

What made you want to stay with Amicus ITS?

I get to do things I have always had a keen interest in which is encouraged by the company ie. website and app development. One example was that I developed a unique password management solution called ‘PasswordLocker’. This was rolled out by the company in 2014. Any new ideas arising from me or third parties, where there’s an improvement, I check this through Change as part of the approvals process and once greenlit, I get to create the solution with the correct coding and these can then be adopted by the firm.

What would you pick out as being a highlight or highlights of your career so far here?

On the development side, I was invited to be part of the website architect team to design the Amicus ITS website refresh in 2016. This involved both the technical and design elements which was both interesting and challenging.  I happen to be a games developer in my own time and this has helped me with the knowledge and the tools I use at work when doing other development projects, so it’s a win-win all round.

If someone was considering a career with Amicus ITS what would you recommend about working here?

I would encourage anyone with a keen interest in technology to talk to us.  I joined the company straight out of college, so I started with the Service Desk. This was fun and enabled me to have a properly structured career path of opportunity.  I’ve been happy to exploit this and been able to do some really interesting work over the time that I’ve been here.

Would you say that management are open and approachable?

Yes - and they are also flexible to taking on ideas which is good for me as I’m the sort of person that if I identify something, I want to be confident that I can talk with my team leader, knowing that it won’t get brushed under the carpet.

Does the future still look bright for you?

Yes I would say so.   The things I like doing, I’m doing more of them - and I get to be creative.  There are new developments planned within the company, which for me will mean a number of new projects coming my way, along with the day-to-day, which will continue to keep me interested.
